Inter Alfa: CO₂ refrigeration system for a distribution centre — from idea to operation

When the cold chain becomes a competitive advantage

A modern distribution centre for food products now operates in the region, relying on advanced industrial refrigeration solutions based on CO₂ refrigerant. The complete cold store solution for the investor Inter Alfa was designed by the MB Frigo Grupa engineering team on a turnkey basis, from the first sketch to commissioning and monitoring during operation.

About the investor

Inter Alfa is a company specialising in the distribution and storage of food products. The daily rhythm is marked by high stock turnover: trucks come and go continuously, and every pallet of chilled goods must be at the prescribed temperature at all times. In such an environment, the cold chain becomes the foundation of the business – customer and supplier trust rests on it. That is why the investor set high requirements: uncompromising reliability, energy efficiency and full traceability of temperature regimes.

The challenge: 8 cold rooms, three temperature regimes, 24/7 operation

A refrigeration system that supports high daily stock turnover and fast handling between temperature zones: 8 cold rooms at +4 °C and −18 °C and a handling and loading area at +10 °C – in continuous 24/7/365 operation for the next few decades.

The solution: industrial refrigeration based on CO₂ (R744)

Multi-compressor CO₂ unit with redundancy

Several compressors share the load, so the failure of one does not stop cooling, and an independent backup unit takes over maintaining the temperature regimes during servicing or unexpected downtime.

Room within a room

A special feature of the project is the cold rooms with racking storage, built so that one chamber sits inside another with a different temperature regime. This maximises space utilisation and shortens handling routes. Sliding cold room doors retain temperatures overnight, while double high-speed roll-up doors allow forklifts to pass quickly during working hours. Goods flow fast – and the cold stays where it should.

CO₂ (R744) as a long-term decision

The environmentally friendly refrigerant enables energy-efficient cooling and a long-term sustainable solution in the context of the F-gas regulation, with a permanently low refrigerant price. Dynamic control automatically adjusts the cooling capacity to the actual needs of the warehouse, keeping running costs at an optimum.

24/7 digital monitoring

The system is connected to the Carel BOSS monitoring platform: remote control from any device, instant alarms at any deviation, continuous temperature logging and automatic HACCP reports. The MB Frigo service team sees the system before a problem becomes a problem.

Value for the investor

Stable storage conditions, full control over the cold chain and reliable operation with high stock turnover. The CO₂ system eliminates the regulatory risk of future restrictions on F-gas refrigerants, the backup unit ensures operational continuity, and digital monitoring turns HACCP compliance from an obligation into an automated process.

Frequently asked questions

Why CO₂ (R744) for industrial refrigeration of a distribution centre?

CO₂ is a natural refrigerant with a GWP of 1, exempt from F-gas regulation restrictions. With energy-efficient operation and a permanently low charge cost, it is a long-term safe investment without regulatory risk.

What does a "turnkey" solution mean in industrial refrigeration?

MB Frigo Grupa takes over the entire project: from needs analysis and design, through manufacture of the refrigeration unit and construction of the cooled space, to commissioning, staff training and ongoing maintenance and remote monitoring.

How does the system ensure an unbroken cold chain?

The multi-compressor unit with redundancy and an independent backup unit ensure continuous cooling even during servicing or failure, and the Carel BOSS platform logs temperatures 24/7 and automatically generates HACCP reports.

Did you know?

Under the floor of the cold rooms there are – heaters. It sounds paradoxical, but there is a solid engineering reason. When a room runs at −18 °C for years, without protection the cold would slowly penetrate the ground beneath the building. The moisture in the soil then freezes and forms ice lenses that grow, expand and lift the ground unevenly – a phenomenon known as frost heave. The result can be a cracked floor slab, deformed racks and serious structural damage. That is why a heating system is installed under the floor insulation to keep the ground permanently above freezing point. An invisible detail – that protects the whole building.
